US: rise in illegal websites selling illicit opioids -

us-selling

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) published a recent assessment of 100 illegal websites selling medicines to American patients. The study revealed that:

• more than half of the sites (54%) offered CS (controlled substances). This is a substantial increase in comparison to the 13% identified in the sites NABP reviewed and listed over the past nine years.

• 98% offered medication without a prescription.

• 76% sold foreign medicines or non-FDA approved products.

• 40% offered CS, including fentanyl-based opioids. The most frequently sold medicine without a prescription was Xanax.

Almost 64,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2016. Of those deaths, 66% were caused by opioids, including fentanyl which is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine.
