A British woman was detained in Egypt last month after attempting to enter the country with 290 banned painkiller tablets. The woman claimed that the tablets, Tramadol and Naxopren, were for her husband’s sore back. Tramadol is sometimes used as a heroin substitute. The authorities have stated that: “Some prescribed and over-the-counter medicines that are available in the UK are considered controlled substances in Egypt and can’t be brought into the country without prior permission from Egypt’s Ministry of Health”. The woman faces up to 25 years in prison, if not the death sentence.
