
The Gujarat Food and Drug Administration (FDCA) seized the equivalent of $75,000 worth of fake antibiotics after discovering a major traffic involving three of the country’s western states. Two Ahmedabad (the largest city in Gujarat) wholesalers have been arrested and charged. Eight types of fake medicines including antibiotics (cefixime, azithromycin, ofloxacin) were seized during the operation. A revealed that the products did not contain active ingredients. The FDCA director has called for vigilance and for tighter monitoring in all states as similar hauls (mainly illicit abortion pills) have been reported recently between Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, and also between Gujarat and Delhi two years ago.
