Whilst fake medicine trafficking is increasing in Conakry, which according to guineenews.org is the result of the government’s lack of support, the Guinean Pharmacists Syndicate aims to step up the combat against trafficking, especially in Madina market, the hub of illicit medicine sales in the capital. The fight is not an easy one given previous governmental failures in the sector, especially due to opposition from some authorized pharmacists who regularly stock up on clandestine supplies. To date, medicine counterfeiting is thought to generate $85m despite the 1994 law which only entitles legal pharmacies to sell medicines.
