On 6 October, the Indian Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) suggested cancelling CRO licence renewals for bioequivalence studies and authorizations for pharmaceutical laboratories to produce and sell medicines. The organization intends to make these licenses permanent in order to improve economics within the sector. Several experts have protested against this project which could damage the quality of sold medicine. This concern is heightened by the fact that several local laboratories are suspected of selling online substandard medicines nationally and also to Africa, where there is less monitoring. It is also thought that the laboratories are selling to the United States where regulations focus more on illegal trafficking and the violation of intellectual property.
