This is the arrest in May 2016 of a pharmacist in Bekasi close to Jakarta for selling medicine without a license that allowed the Indonesian police to uncover the ring. The police arrested 15 suspects and seized hundreds of fake vaccines, including products sold as polio and hepatitis B treatments. Those arrested confessed selling the vaccines throughout Indonesia since 2003 in around thirty hospitals and community health centers.
The Health Minister said that the fake vaccines contained a mixture of intravenous liquids and antibiotics. Even though the vaccines are not lethal, the minister stated that children were not immunized against the diseases. The Indonesian government will re-vaccinate children under ten years of age.
