The number of seizures done recently in Mali illustrates the importance of the phenomenon of counterfeiting and smuggling of drugs. Indeed, between August and September 2015, in the southwestern region of Mali: 1 box of pharmaceutical products with 4,000 capsules, and nearly 16,000 tablets were seized at the customs checkpoint of Selingue; 7 repackaged packages of 130 kg containing pharmaceuticals were seized in Kita; 3 boxes of veterinary products and 2 packages of pharmaceutical products in Didiéni; and in Samanko, 13 boxes of Novalgin injection and 4 boxes of Diclofenac.
This traffic is now global, industrialized and professionalized. But the most affected countries by this pharmaceutical crime are Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria and parts of West Africa.
