QUATERLY PRESS REVIEW APRIL TO JUNE 2015 -

… this is the alarming record reached this quarter for seizures, arrests and website closures worldwide.

Operation Pangea VIII has once again proved its efficacy and shown the necessity of taking action against counterfeit medicines on Internet and its illegal trade at all levels and on all continents. IRACM would like to thank all the actors on the ground who took part in this vital operation.

We are currently facing an intensification of the counterfeit situation worldwide with huge impacts on world health. The Institute recently published a review of the situation for the international media which showed that the illicit trade of fake medicines was increasing dangerously, with a proliferation of sub-standard medicines and thefts of medicines in Italy and Mexico. In addition, the authorisation of parallel imports in Europe could easily lead to the integration of counterfeit medicines into official distribution channels: three fake medicines were recently introduced in Germany, right on France’s doorstep.

At the same time, IRACM is taking care of the actors on the ground, passing on our renowned expertise in training sessions and conferences. This has shown positive impacts in inquiries and investigations in Europe, Africa and Asia.

Our Institute also informs the general public who might buy medicines from unauthorised websites or when travelling. A six-month nationwide campaign was launched in France in July 2015. We have published a booklet, available on Internet, in doctors’ waiting rooms and on websites for healthcare professionals, to teach patients about fake medicines and advise how to avoid them. We thus hope to contribute to preserving the quality of health care and the medicines provided.

There is now no possible doubt that international action must be increased to thwart this escalation which would bring the situation out of control, compromise the rule of law and endanger public health worldwide.
