In France, customs seizures of counterfeit medicines are increasing in 2014

Seizure realized in Le Havre on February 27th, 2014 with over 10 tons of counterfeit medicines.

In 2014, the French Customs have seen increasing seizures in all areas, but with 8.8 million counterfeit articles intercepted, the growth is over 15% year-on-year. This figure is close to the record set in 2011: 8.9 million articles.

With the interception conducted by the investigators of the Direction of Havre Customs Operations, on February 27, 2014, counterfeit drugs remain the main counterfeiting in France, with a seizure record at EU level: more than 10 tons of counterfeit medicines in a container having transited through Belgium. Instead of the goods declared “China tea”, 601 packs of sachets and tablets were uncovered. Some tablets contained no active ingredient; others included one, but which did not correspond to the authorized dosage which can induce a health risk for the patients.
