June 5, 2014 – After an investigation that lasted ten months, Colombia and Venezuela authorities have dismantled an international network dedicated to smuggling and falsification of drugs. The operation resulted in the arrest of 25 people: 14 in Colombia and 11 in Venezuela.
The network falsified expired drugs illegally acquired in the Venezuelan social security system, and sold them illegally in this country and in Colombia.
Police said the group crossed the border between the states of Táchira and the North of Santander, where the drugs were packaged and labeled with fake labels, new validity dates and false health checks. Once falsified, the drugs were distributed in Venezuela and Colombia: Bogota, Cali and Ocaña.
Among these counterfeit drugs were fake treatments used to treat serious diseases such as cancer, HIV / Aids, epilepsy, or some nervous system problems.
90,000 pills, 21,629 boxes, 10,377 labels and other materials were seized during the operation.
This year, the Colombian Police seized more than 390,000 units of counterfeit drugs.
