No. 2 global trade in counterfeit medicines : Latin America

October 2, 2013 – According to the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), Latin America has become the second region of the world trade in counterfeit drugs after Africa. The traffickers have found networks to sell counterfeit medicines without passing into the hands of health professionals.

According to the Pharmaceutical Security Institute (PSI), and during the year 2012, 381 cases of counterfeit drugs were detected.

In Ecuador, between January and August 2013, the Attorney General of Quito treated 15 cases of adulterated pills. Last year, there were 18.
